In early 2025, Junhee Kim stepped outside the concert hall and into the recording studio for the screen — providing the solo piano recordings for the Korean film 폭락 (international title Crypto Man), a crime drama inspired by the 2022 Luna cryptocurrency collapse that erased some fifty trillion won in value.
Rather than a conventional score, the film's piano was recorded on a Steinway Model D — the flagship concert grand — with Kim at the keyboard. The result became one of the film's most talked-about elements: audiences repeatedly described the music as tense, haunting, and quietly menacing, an unsettling counterpoint to the story's spiral of ambition and collapse.
For a pianist known for Liszt and the Romantic repertoire, the project marked a striking change of register — bending his sound toward suspense and dread rather than lyricism. The soundtrack pairs his playing with music from Nancy Boy, a composer who has contributed to RM's solo work, under the direction of acclaimed film composer Won Il.
폭락 premiered in Korean theaters in January 2025. It also carries a poignant note in Korean cinema: it is the final film of the late actor Song Jae-rim.
